A Simple & Joyful First Birthday Party - John Deere Style!

As Nicholas' mother, it's no surprise that I take delight in my son's sweet, silly personality. I enjoy each of his funny quirks and every little milestone. I probably bore my friends and family with an over-abundance of details, but I just love to share about my boy.
That's why it fills my heart when my friends and family delight in my son, as I do. When they enjoy his silly facial expressions, his new "tricks", and even laugh with me when he gets in trouble.

My mama heart was positively overflowing on Saturday, as many of our friends got together to celebrate Nicholas' first birthday. I shouldn't have been surprised, but I couldn't get over how blessed Nicholas is to have so many "aunts" and "uncles" who love him. For not living by any of our family members, Nicholas sure is loved!
We celebrated our big, one-year-old boy with a John Deere birthday party! We had food, cake, and opened presents. Nicholas did so great! I thought he would be overwhelmed, but he played with his new toys and enjoyed all his buddies. Brian and I were proud and happy parents.

It was the best kind of chaos - our tiny house was literally FULL of adults, kids, and babies. I loved it!
I am NOT crafty. I can barely cut paper in a straight line and I called my mom about 30 times to ask about food and decorations. I am no expert at parties - so I don't share this post to show how "great" of a party planner/mom I am. I hope that sharing the details of Nicholas' party will show that a small budget & the desire to celebrate our kids is enough to make a great party! Non-Martha-Stewart-like moms - we can plan a fun party and keep things simple :) I used boxed cake mix for the cake pictured below, made really simple food, and had a lot of help. Oh, and my attempt at a "healthy cake" for Nicholas ended up...interesting, to say the least! (Read: he only ate a few bites.)

So with this in mind, here's a few fun party details! (Links to some of the fun decorations will be at the end of my post.)

And because I like to keep things on a budget:
I found the yellow cups at Target in the dollar section, the green tractors holding candy for under $3/piece at the grocery store, and did really simple foods such as pre-made artichoke dip, cream cheese & raspberry salsa, satsumas, goldfish, and candy.

Happy birthday sweet Nicholas! I'm so blessed to be your mama, and you were worth all the planning :) Love you sweet boy!
