Sick Days & Mama Bears

Today a kleenex box, H2O, and my TV remote are keeping me and Nicholas company. I've had a lingering cold for over a week and now it's getting worse. I'm going to spend the day watching re-runs of Gilmore Girls and House Hunters. And trying not to laugh when I scare the daylights out of my son every time I sneeze. Which is a lot. Poor kid.

Here's my couch potato buddy:

Last night I realized that I am becoming a "Mama Bear", as my friend Mary puts it. If there's a chance that Nicholas's well being could be at stake, I turn from a non-confrontational wimp into a grizzly bear ready to attack. I typically am a big scaredy cat, but something about being a mother makes my claws come out in order to protect my child. Early this morning, around 5, I woke up with Nicholas to feed him. When I put him back into his crib, I noticed that there were 2 spiders by the wall on his crib. One of them was humongous, and that's not just coming from my tiny perspective. It really was big. I HATE spiders and usually make Brian kill them, but he was sleeping peacefully in the other room. So I decided to overcome my fear of spiders and rescue my child from their dangerous pincers by smashing them to smithereens. I am really tough, I know.

Do any other moms out there turn into "Mama Bears" when the need arises?

  1. Hi Mackenzie...Just wanted to leave you a quick note to say that I fell in love with your blog this morning. I stumbled upon your page through Casey Wiegand and spent far too much time reading a few posts this morning. I am a 23 yr old 5'1 married to a 28 yr old 6'2 and I look young to go with it...at my husbands work Christmas party someone asked if I was his niece...stellar moment right there. We don't have any babies yet but hopefully soon :) I was out last weekend with my two nephews (3.5 yrs and 11 months) and got some stares. Oh well. We will appreciate it when we are approaching 40 right? Anyways...just wanted to say hi! Thanks for sharing your experiences as a pint-sized Mama...I will be back to see what else I have to look forward too :) Hope you start feeling better.

  2. Kim, thank you so much for your comment! Isn't Casey just awesome? I love her blog. I can't believe someone asked if you were your husband's niece! That is probably a moment you'll never forget. And I totally agree - we'll love looking young when we're a little older! I hope when I'm 50 people think I"m 30 :) Thank you for reading, your comment was encouraging to me!
